If you’ve never worn wigs before, this is an understandable question as you want to do it correctly to look your best. If you’ve always wondered what is the correct way to put on a wig, the following tips will help.
Putting on a Wig
The first step to putting on a wig is to prepare your hair. Proper preparation will depend on how long your hair is. If you have very short or no hair, the best way to prepare is to wear a wig cap, which makes it easier to secure the wig to your head. For short hair, you should brush it back, ensure it’s away from your face, pin it in place with bobby pins, and apply a small amount of hair spray. If you have long hair, it should be pinned back and kept flat with either pin curls or French braids, which are then crossed at the nape of your neck and secured in place.
Once your hair is properly prepared, you can then put on your wig.
- Hold your wig near the label at the nape with both hands to steady it.
- Tilt your head forward, carefully place the wig above your eyebrows, and slide it into place on top of your head using a back-and-forth motion.
- Once the wig is on your head push it back until it is behind your natural hairline.
- Your wig will have ear tabs on the sides; these tabs should go in front of your ears to center your wig.
- Now you can style your wig to create your desired appearance, do note some wigs come with parts, so you may have to work with the wig a bit to achieve your desired look.
- Your wig should be secured to hold it in place and prevent slipping. You have several options: wig grip headbands, wig tape, wig clips, bobby pins, and a silicon solution sheet.
- Now that your wig is properly set, styled, and secure you can tidy it up by tucking any loose hairs and making any last minor adjustments for comfort.
